One of baseball’s most remembered no hitters was thrown by Doc Ellis on this day in 1970. The reason the no hitter became remembered and even a fixture in pop culture has to do with Doc did before the game. The Pirates flew to San Diego on the 11th, and Ellis said that he visited a friend in Los Angeles, and used LSD two or three times. Then on the 12th, his scheduled day to pitch, he thought it was still the 11th and took a hit around noon, then two hours later, his friend told him that he was on the mound that night. He then flew to San Diego, got to the stadium at 4:30, then took the mound at 6:05. Ellis recounted what happened after:
There have been debates over the validity of Ellis’ claims from journalists and players alike, but Ellis himself can not tell the full story with certainty as he regretted taking LSD that day, as he said it robbed him of his greatest professional memory. Ellis would go on to pitch until 1979 with 1971 being his best year where he started the all star game on the mound and won the World Series with the Pirates. But whether the story is true or not, it grew to become a great baseball and pop culture legend, numerous references made in shows, music, and more to the feat, which went a long way in his induction into the Baseball Reliquary’s Shrine of the Eternals in 1999.
