As people checked the papers everyday to check in on Joe DiMaggio’s hitting streak, the modern record he was trying to meet was 41 set by George Eisler. In a doubleheader on June 29th, he tied the record in game 1, then ran into a problem in game 2 as he lost his favorite bat as it was stolen. And he would not record hits in his first three at bats, and for his 4th at bat, he followed Tommy Henrich’s advice by using his bat which DiMaggio gave him, and it paid off as he would single to pass Sisler.
No matter the time, there’s always someone to point out the actual facts as despite Sisler’s 41 game streak, there was also Willie Keeler who had a 44 game hit streak over two seasons from 1896-97, he would then get a hit in the next game setting up for a perfect opportunity to tie him in a doubleheader against the Red Sox. And in the first game he would hit an infield single, then in game 2 he hit a first inning single to tie Keeler. He then had a chance to pass him on July 2nd and in the first he would be denied when Stan Spence made a great leaping catch, but after a groundout in the 3rd, he came up in the 5th and fittingly, he would hit a home run over the left field wall and the left fielder who watched that ball go past him was none other than Ted Williams. Setting once and for all that Dimaggio was the consecutive hit streak king.
The streak lasting for 61 days, and during this 56 game stretch, DiMaggio batted .408, hitting 15 home runs and 16 doubles with a .717 slug and 1.181 ops, recording 91 hits in total, driving in 55 and scoring 56 runs. The Yankees also went 41-13 in this stretch which included a no decision in a rainout as they would pull away from the rest. A record that many deem unbreakable especially in the modern day and another crazy part of DiMaggio’s streak is that after it ended, he went on another 16 game hit streak, meaning he hit safely in 72 of 73 games. And going back to Williams, in this same timeframe, he hit .412 compared to DiMaggio’s .408, and this caused Williams average to go down. DiMaggio having real potential to pass Williams but he cooled down at the end of August, but Williams did not as he would end up hitting .406, the last .400 season MLB has seen. But the streak was really the reason DiMaggio took home MVP along with the team success though Williams deserved it more.
