An infuriating sight for almost everyone on the field is watching a pitcher walk everyone, and fans were in for a treat watching dolly gray give up 8 in one inning in 1909.
Gray made his debut at the age of 30 and had been pretty solid for the Washington Nationals and not really known for his lack of control, but in the first game of a doubleheader against the White Sox in late august it was a different story. He got out of the 1st without giving up a run, but seemingly got the yips before that was even a thing as he walked the first 7 batters, the White Sox scoring 3 runs without having to do anything. The White Sox would then go to add 3 more and Gray gave up another walk which passed the previous record of 7 in an inning, done 3 times before 1903.
And what’s wild is Gray pitched 8 innings, gave up 11 walks, and just 1 hit. Had he even been just wild instead of super wild, he may have actually won this game he lost 6-3. And for the sake of us all, hopefully this never happens again, unless it’s in the favor of a team we like.
